If you’re going to visit Bali Island, you will see numerous temples in this Island. Each Balinese house has family temple beside that one village (banjar) has three type of temples such as Pura Desa (Village Temple worship god as form of Brahma), Pura Puseh/Segara (Sea Temple worship god as form of Wisnu), Pura Dalem (Dalem Tempe worship god as form of Siwa) and other popular temples spreading all over the island.   Bali well known as Island with thousand temples, that’s why you should visit one or two of them to experience the Balinese culture atmosphere.

Batur (Ulun Danu) Temple

Batur Temple is situated in at Karang Anyar, Batur Village, Kintamani District. Batur Temple also known as Ulun Danu Temple. The temple faces westward where Mount Batur and remains of its solidified black lava serves as backdrop and Lake Batur stretches far down the slope, enchanting the beauty of nature around the temple. Since the devastating eruption in 1917 which destroyed everything including the temple itself, then head of the village along with other prominent figures, initiated an action of bringing the surviving shrines with them and the rebuilt Batur Temple on the higher ground at Karangayar its present location. In the temple a grand old Gong Gede is housed which accompanies the sacred dances of Baris Gede and the ceremonial Rejang Dance for women during a major ‘odalan’ here which usually takes place in March and lasts 11 days.

Tanah Lot Temple

Tanah Lot Temple is located on the coast of west Bali at the village of Beraban in the Tabanan Regency. Tanah lot, Temple  one of the most popular temple & places of interest in Bali. The Temple of Tanah Lot simple in its construction, is dramatic I its ocean front location and is one of the main temples in the worship of Balinese gods.  Tanah Lot has a along history in the world of tourism. The temple itself is built on a small promontory, which is only accessible at low tide. During high water the rock takes on the appearance of a large boat at sea, such is its shape. There are some caves nearby the temple where poisonous snakes live there to guard the temple. The best time to visit Tanah Lot Temple at sunset time around 6 PM onward, you can view the beautiful sunset when the golden red skies frame the temple.

Pulaki Temple

Pulaki Temple is located approximate 53 kilometers west of Singaraja. A large temple on the both sides of the road. Part of it is perched on craggy rock looking out to sea, the other part climbs into the hills, both parts house monkeys.

Kehen Temple

Pura Kehen is one of the most ancient temples in Bali. Pura Kehen is situated in southern slope of Bangli hill, about two kilometers form the Bangli Town.  At this temple that three old bronze manuscripts were housed. The people around the village worship this temple. The ceremony takes place on Rabu Kliwon Shinta where Ngusabha ceremony is held once in every three years priod, which falls on Purnama Kelima around November. It is truly an historical temple worth for you to visit. It has a long flight of steps pointing down to the south. It can be reached by any mode of transport through a well kept shafted road, or a short walk from Bangli Cultural Hall (Sasana Budaya Bangli).

Jagatnata Temple

Jagatnata Temple is located in heart of Denpasar City nearby Puputan Badung Public Park. Jagatnata is the biggest Hindu Temple in Denpasar Town where all Hindu people around Denpasar come to visit Jagatnata Tempe to pray. The crowded season in this temple is usually during full moon. This temple is decorated with religious & artistic ornaments. In the center of temple area there is a high temple building encircled by the fertile tropical garden.

Kebo Edan Temple

Pura Kebon Edan temple (Mad/Carzy Buffalo Temple)  is situated in Pejeng Village, Gianyar Regency only couple of meters from Patung Arjuna Bertapa. In this temple containing Siwa statue in the form of  Bhairawa Dancer,  the 3,6 meters tall statue was ancient heritage of XIII century. This statue using a mask and dances upon dead body  has snakes seemingly curling around its ankles and wrists. People around the temple named this statue Kebo Edan, beside this statue there are some broken statues on the location. Bhairawa statue was restored by Bali archeologist office on 1952.

Penataran  Sasih Temple

Penataran Sasih Temple is located in the main road to Tampak Siring Temple. This temple well known for its big “nekara” with height 186,5 centimeters and has 160 centimeters diameter. This Bronze “nekara” ancient was left from pre historical century famous with name Moon of Pejeng (fallen moon).
 
That’s why this temple called Pura Penataran Sasih since“sasih” means moon. The most interesting part of this ancient is the moon ornament formed as carved face with glared big eyes, long & big ears with pendants made from “uang kepeng” (coin with hole in the middle) and triangle nose. Some of important ancient statues also found in this place.
 
Pura Pegulingan
 
This temple is located in Basanganmbu Village, east of Tirta Empul Temple not far from main road to Kintamani. The temple was founded in 1983 by local government, during excavation a big octagon “stupa” ( Buddhist religious structure), Buddhist “mantra” (spells) from VIII century, some Gana’s relief was founded and this is the first ancient discovery in Bali.
 
Pusering Jagat Temple

North of Pura Kebo Edan is the location of Pusering Jagat Temple. This temple is considering as ‘pusat dunia” (center of the world), houses some of ancient statues one of them is Catuhkaya statue. Other ancient heritage you can find in this temple is vessel made from stone with relief illustrate goddess looking for means. This vessel illustrates the glory of Majapahit Kingdom in East of Java on 1329 century.

This vessel also called “Sangku Sudamala”,  the broken parts of vessel was restored in 1952. And recently in the “Gedong Purus” building was founded very naturalist “phallus” and “vagina” .
 
Gunung Kawi Temple

Gunung Kawi Temple is situated in Tampak Siring Village, not far away from the road to Tampak Siring Palace. Gunung Kawi’s complex divided into 2 parts by Pakerisan River. After founded in 1920 This temple was restored. There are 2 type of “candi tebing” (cliff temple),  the first type comprises 5 “candi” reside at the east of Pakerisan River. One of epigraph in this “candi” is using “Kediri” letter from XI century. The second comprise 4 “candi tebing” reside at the west of Pakerisan River, also founded at both places small caves for meditation and wihara (Buddhist Temple).

Small caves (niches) for meditation also can be found at the southeast & west of this temple. The most famous cliff temple is called "Makam X". On the above of the temple consecution in particular to the Eastside River, there is an article of Kediri word type sounding ‘Haji Lumahing Jalu'. Haji means a king, the Lumah means a temple or Sidha Dewata means to return to the nature of deity and Ing Jalu means in Pekerisan. The Jalu mean the Keris literal. The entire words mean that king is made in temple form at Pekerisan. From this article is assumed that this temple is dedicated to Udayana King which is also called Marakata and Anak Wungsu. Kerobokan &  Tegallingah are another ‘”candi tebing” (cliff temple) reside in this place.
